〜って (casual quotation / topic)

tte (kudaketa in'you / shudai)

By Nihongo PathUpdated

This form is also taught at JLPT N3, where it carries a different sense or register.

Meaning

Casual equivalent of と (quotation), という (called), and は (topic). Also sentence-final hearsay ("they say").

って is the casual all-rounder of spoken Japanese. It replaces と for quoting (来るって言ってた = said he's coming), という for naming (「さくら」って店 = a shop called Sakura), and は for a topic (漢字って難しい = kanji are hard, you know). At the end of a sentence it reports what you heard: 明日は休みだって = "I hear tomorrow's a holiday". It is only for casual speech.

Conversation among friends, family and close colleagues, and in casual texts and manga. You will hear it constantly in the N4 listening section. In writing, polite speech and business it is replaced by と, という and は.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Quote: plain sentence + って + 言う / 思う / 聞く: 行くって言ってた
  • Naming: N + って + (いう) N: 「さくら」って(いう)店
  • Topic: N + って: 漢字って難しいね; also 〜って何? (what is…?)
  • Hearsay at sentence end: sentence + って: 明日は休みだって
  • Asking someone to repeat: 何だって? / え、〜って?

  4. Step 4「さくら」という店 → 「さくら」って店naming: という → って
  5. Step 5漢字は難しい → 漢字って難しいtopic: は → って (with a feeling of "you know")

Natural examples

  1. 田中さんは明日来るって言ってたよ。

    Tanaka said he's coming tomorrow.

Quote: って replaces と before 言う. 言ってた is the contracted 言っていた.

    「さくら」って みせ、しってる?

Do you know a shop called "Sakura"?

Naming: って replaces という (a shop called…).

  3. 漢字って難しいね。

    Kanji are hard, aren't they?

    せんせい、きょうは こないって。

The teacher says he's not coming today, apparently.

    Sentence-final って = "I hear / he said".

    「ケータイ」って なに? ああ、けいたいでんわの ことか。

Common mistakes

  • ✗
(in an email to a client)明日は休みだって聞きました。
    ✓
    明日は休みだと聞きました。/ 休みだそうです。
    Why
って is casual only. In polite or written Japanese use と / そうです.
  • ✗
    田中さんは来ないってを言った。
    ✓
    田中さんは来ないって言った。
    Why
って already links the quote to 言う; no extra particle is needed.
  • ✗
    漢字ってが難しい。
    ✓
    漢字って難しい。
    Why
Topic って replaces は / が; do not add another particle.

Sentence-final って often carries a hint of "so they say" or "I told you": 行かないって! (I said I'm not going!). って also shortens 〜と言っても (〜ったって) and 〜とは (〜って) in fast speech; recognise them in listening. Watch for だ before って after nouns and な-adjectives in hearsay: 休みだって, 元気だって, but verbs and い-adjectives attach directly: 来るって, 寒いって.

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • In 文法形式 with a casual dialogue, って is the answer where a formal sentence would have と, という or は. Register is the key: look for casual endings (〜てた, 〜んだ, よ/ね).
  • In listening, sentence-final って means the speaker is reporting someone else's words; do not treat it as the speaker's own decision.
