Common mistakes
- ✗
(formal report)
- ✓
- Why
- In polite or formal speech use と, not って.
- ✗
(meaning: he said he got married — ambiguous)
- ✓
(quote)
- Why
- Sentence-final って alone is ambiguous; んだって makes the hearsay reading clear.
- ✗
- Why
- って is not an object marker; it introduces a topic or a quote.
Purely spoken. As topic marker it can replace は with a nuance of defining/explaining.
JLPT N3 tips
On the exam
- In casual dialogue, a blank after a plain clause followed by 言ってた / 思う = って.
- A blank after a noun followed by 何 / どういう意味 = って (topic).
- Sentence-final んだって in listening dialogues signals secondhand information; the speaker did not witness it.
