Meaning
Spoken form of 〜てしまう (#22): completion or regret.
〜ちゃう is the spoken shortcut for 〜てしまう: 忘れてしまった → 忘れちゃった (I forgot, oops). When the て-form ends in で, it becomes じゃう: 飲んでしまった → 飲んじゃった. The meaning is the same as てしまう: finishing something completely, or regret about something that happened. ちゃう conjugates like a Group 1 verb: ちゃった, ちゃいます, ちゃおう, ちゃって. Several other contractions belong to the same family: 〜ておく → 〜とく, 〜ている → 〜てる, 〜なければ → 〜なきゃ, 〜なくては → 〜なくちゃ.
Casual conversation among friends, family and classmates, and in anime, dramas and text messages. It is not used in essays or polite business speech, where you say 〜てしまいました. You must recognise it in the listening section even if you rarely say it.

Common mistakes
- ✗
- 飲んちゃった。
- ✓
- 飲んじゃった。
- Why
- After a で-ending て-form (飲んで) the contraction is じゃう, not ちゃう.
- ✗
- (to a teacher)宿題を忘れちゃいました。
- ✓
- 宿題を忘れてしまいました。
- Why
- ちゃいました exists but sounds childish or over-casual with a teacher; use the full form.
- ✗
- 食べちゃいた。
- ✓
- 食べちゃった。
- Why
- ちゃう is a Group 1 verb (like 買う): past is ちゃった, not ちゃいた.
ちゃった alone is a common exclamation of "oops": やっちゃった (I messed up), 遅れちゃった (I'm late). Non-past ちゃう often warns: 早くしないと風邪ひいちゃうよ (you'll catch a cold). Listening drills: recognise 〜てる (ている), 〜とく (ておく), 〜なきゃ (なければ), 〜なくちゃ (なくては), 〜ちゃ (ては) in fast speech.
JLPT N4 tips
On the exam
- Match the て-form ending: て → ちゃう, で → じゃう. Options like 読んちゃう or 食べじゃう are always wrong.
- If the dialogue is casual (〜よ, 〜ね, plain forms) and the meaning is regret or completion, choose ちゃった over しまいました, which would break the register.
