〜ながら(も)
nagara (mo)
By Nihongo PathUpdated
This form is also taught at JLPT N1, where it carries a different sense or register.
Meaning
although, despite (being)
〜ながら(も) here means "although, despite (being)…", not "while doing". Two facts that seem contradictory are joined: although young, he is reliable; small though it is, it's our happy home; even though he knew, he didn't tell me.
書き言葉寄り. It follows Vます stems (知りながら), Vていながら, い-adjectives (若いながら), な-adjectives and nouns directly (残念ながら, 子供ながら). も strengthens the concession. Set phrases: 残念ながら, 我ながら, 生まれながら, 及ばずながら.
Formation
V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.
Vます + ながら(も) / Aい + ながら(も) / Aな + ながら(も) / N + ながら(も) / Vて いながら

JLPT N2 tips
On the exam
- A state, adjective or noun before the blank and a contrasting clause after → ながら(も) (concessive).
- Distractors: つつ (verbs only), のに, ところで. If the blank follows a noun like 子供 or 初心者, ながら is the answer.
- 残念ながら in the options is a giveaway when the following clause is bad news.
