Lesson 148 of 180

〜ながら(も)

nagara (mo)

By Nihongo PathUpdated

This form is also taught at JLPT N2, where it carries a different sense or register.

Meaning

although …; despite being …; while (contrary to expectation)

〜ながら(も) here is not "while doing"; it is the concessive "although". 貧しいながらも幸せだった = "Though poor, he was happy". The word before it is a state (adjective, noun, or a stative verb such as 知っている), and the second half is the surprising opposite. Adding も strengthens the contrast.

Both spoken and written, common in essays and descriptions. Typical with adjectives (狭い・小さい・貧しい), nouns (子供・新人・初心者), and stative verbs (知っている・いる・思う). A review point from N2; N1 tests the choice between ながらも and つつも.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • いA + ながら(も) (狭いながらも)
  • なA + ながら(も) (残念ながら・不本意ながら)
  • N + ながら(も) (子供ながらに / 新人ながら)
  • Vます-stem (stative) + ながら(も) (知っていながら・思いながらも)

Natural examples

    かれはまずしいながらも、しあわせにくらしていた。

    Though poor, he lived happily.

貧しい (state) + ながらも → happy: the surprising contrast.

  2. 狭いながらも、ようやく自分の家を持てた。

    せまいながらも、ようやくじぶんのいえをもてた。

Small as it is, I finally have a home of my own.

狭いながらも: the classic set phrase about a small but beloved home.

  3. 知っていながら、彼は何も言わなかった。

    しっていながら、かれはなにもいわなかった。

Although he knew, he said nothing.

知っていながら: stative verb; "despite knowing" with a hint of blame.

  4. 新人ながら、彼は堂々とプレゼンをやり遂げた。

    しんじんながら、かれはどうどうとプレゼンをやりとげた。

Though a newcomer, he delivered the presentation with confidence.

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    走りながらも、疲れた。
    ✓
    走りながら、音楽を聞いた。/ 疲れていながらも、走り続けた。
    Why
With an action verb, ながら is simultaneous "while". The concessive ながらも needs a state.
  • ✗
    残念ながらも、行けません。
    ✓
    残念ながら、行けません。
    Why
残念ながら is a fixed adverbial phrase; it does not take も.
  • ✗
    知るながら、黙っていた。
    ✓
    知っていながら、黙っていた。
    Why
Verbs attach with the ます-stem, and stative verbs typically use ている: 知ってい + ながら.

Set phrases: 狭いながらも楽しい我が家, 残念ながら, 不本意ながら, 及ばずながら ("in my humble way"). 知っていながら / わかっていながら often imply blame: someone acted despite knowing better. も is optional but makes the concession clearer; in exam answers it usually appears as ながらも.

JLPT N1 tips

On the exam

  • In 文法形式の判断, an adjective or noun + a blank + a contrasting clause points to ながらも. Adjectives cannot take つつ, which eliminates that distractor.
  • If the word before the blank is an action verb (走り・食べ), ながら means "while"; do not read it as "although".
  • In 並べ替え, ながらも follows its state word directly; the contrasting result comes after.
