Before a noun use さながらの; さながら alone before an adjective sounds incomplete.
  • ✗
    さながら戦場だ。
    ✓
    戦場さながらだ。/さながら戦場のようだ。
    Why
さながら normally follows the noun; as an adverb at the front it needs のようだ.
  • ✗
    実際の火事さながらで訓練した。
    ✓
    実際の火事さながらに訓練した。
    Why
    The adverbial particle is に.

The noun is usually a vivid scene or a model: 戦場・本番・プロ・映画・実際の〜. さながら can also be a sentence adverb meaning "just as if" (さながら〜のようだ), but the N + さながら form is the JLPT target. Adding まるで or まさに strengthens it further.

JLPT N1 tips

On the exam

  • A noun of a striking model (戦場・プロ・本番) + blank + の/に → さながら.
  • Distractors: ごとき, めいた, のようだ. Choose さながら for a formal "just like the real thing" with the N + さながら shape.
  • Check the particle: さながらの before a noun, さながらに before a verb.
