〜かのようだ

ka no you da

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

as if, as though (but not really)

〜かのようだ means "as if, as though", and stresses that the appearance is contrary to fact: he acted as if he knew nothing (he did know); it's warm as if spring had come (it hasn't). It is stronger and more literary than plain 〜ようだ.

書き言葉寄り and literary; also in dramatic speech. Often paired with まるで. Forms: かのようだ (predicate), かのように + verb, かのような + noun. Nouns take である before it (親子であるかのようだ).

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V普通形 + かのようだ / N + (である) + かのようだ; かのように + V / かのような + N

Similar grammar and the difference

  • 〜ようだ

Plain resemblance or inference; may be true. かのようだ insists the appearance is false.

  • 〜みたいだ

Casual equivalent of ようだ; not for this literary contrary-to-fact use.

  • 〜ふりをする

"Pretend": the subject deliberately acts; かのようだ describes how something appears.

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    二人は親子かのようだ。
    ✓
    二人は親子であるかのようだ。/ 親子のようだ。
    Why
A bare noun needs である before かのようだ.
  • ✗
    雨が降るかのようだから、傘を持って行く。
    ✓
    雨が降りそうだから、傘を持って行く。
    Why
かのようだ is contrary to fact, not a prediction.
  • ✗
    彼は知らないかのようなふりをした。
    ✓
    彼は知らないふりをした。/ 知らないかのように振る舞った。
    Why
Combining かのような with ふり doubles the meaning; use one.

まるで〜かのようだ is the fullest form; まるで alone is optional. Common verbs after かのように: 振る舞う, 話す, 見える, 感じる. In academic writing あたかも〜かのようだ appears as a very formal variant.

JLPT N2 tips

On the exam

  • まるで + plain clause + blank + 振る舞う/見える → かのように.
  • Distractors: ようだ, らしい, そうだ. If the sentence implies the opposite is true (何事もなかった when something did happen), pick かのようだ.
  • For noun subjects, the correct option includes である; options with bare noun + かのようだ are traps.
