〜ところだった

almost…ed / was about to… (but didn't) (narrow escape)

〜ところだった means something nearly happened but did not: 電車に乗り遅れるところだった "I almost missed the train". It is usually about something bad that you narrowly avoided, and it goes with adverbs like もう少しで, 危うく, あやうく. The event did not happen.

  'Nearly happened' with a similar meaning (転びそうになった); ところだった is slightly more dramatic.
