〜ようがない / 〜ようもない

Meaning

there is no way to, cannot possibly (no means exist)

Verb stem + ようがない means "there is no way to do X": no method or possibility exists. 住所が分からないので連絡しようがない. It is not about lack of ability but about lack of means. ようもない is a slightly more emphatic variant. どうしようもない (nothing can be done) is a set phrase.

Both speech and writing. Common when explaining why something is impossible: 直しようがない, 説明しようがない, 疑いようがない. In casual speech people may say 〜できない, but ようがない stresses that the means are missing.

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Verb (ます-stem) + ようがない / ようもない
  • する → しようがない; 来る → 来ようがない

    If we don't even know his name, there is no way to search for him.

    The reason (no name) removes any method.

  5. こんなにひどい点数では、言い訳のしようがない。

    こんなにひどいてんすうでは、いいわけのしようがない。

    With a score this bad, there is no possible excuse.

    Noun + のしようがない: a common variant.
