Meaning
under (guidance, influence, conditions)
〜のもとで means "under X": under a teacher's guidance, under certain conditions, under someone's influence. X is a person, an authority, or a condition that surrounds and shapes the action. 〜のもとに is a slightly more abstract variant used with agreements, names, and conditions (両親の理解のもとに / 〜という名のもとに).
Formal written and spoken Japanese: academic, legal, and biographical contexts (教授のもとで / 法のもとに). In conversation people say 〜の下で (した) or 〜に教わって.
