Meaning
-ization, turn into (change into a state)
〜化 attaches to nouns and な-adjective stems to express a change into that state: 自動化 (automation), 高齢化 (aging of society), 簡略化 (simplification). Adding する makes a verb (自動化する); される makes it passive (簡略化された). It is ubiquitous in news and reports about social and technological change.
Written and formal spoken Japanese: news, business, academic texts. In conversation people say 〜になる / 〜にする (便利になる rather than 便利化).
