〜ともすれば / 〜ともすると

is apt to …; tends to … (an undesirable tendency)

ともすれば / ともすると is an adverb meaning "if one is not careful, it easily happens that…". It introduces an undesirable tendency: ともすれば忘れがちだ (we tend to forget). It pairs with がちだ, やすい, てしまう, or a negative outcome.

Formal written Japanese: essays, editorials, advice columns. It is a mild warning about human weakness or a natural drift toward something bad. Not used for good tendencies.
