Meaning
in front of …; given one's position (having said/done …), one cannot …
〜手前 says the speaker is constrained by appearances or by their own previous words. 子供の手前 = "in front of the children (I must behave)"; 自分から言い出した手前 = "since I was the one who proposed it, (I can't back out)". 手前 (てまえ) here means "one's position / face". The second half is almost always an inability or an obligation.
Spoken and written, common when explaining why you cannot back down. Preceded by N + の (子供の手前・上司の手前) or a clause (約束した手前・大口をたたいた手前). Followed by 〜わけにはいかない / 〜ないわけにはいかない / 〜ざるを得ない / 〜られない.
Formation
V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.
N + の + 手前 (人の手前・子供の手前・お客様の手前)Vた / Vる + 手前 (約束した手前・引き受けた手前)Second half: 〜わけにはいかない / 〜ざるを得ない / 〜なければならない / 〜られない

- Why
- The constraint is toward keeping face, so the second half should show obligation, not the opposite.
Common constraints: 〜わけにはいかない, 〜ざるを得ない, 〜しかない, 〜られない. 世間の手前 / 人の手前 = "for appearances' sake". Do not confuse with spatial 手前 (駅の手前で降りる) or the humble pronoun 手前ども.
JLPT N1 tips
On the exam
- In 文法形式の判断, a social observer (子供・部下・お客様) + の + a blank, or a past action + a blank, followed by わけにはいかない, is 手前.
- Distractors 以上 and からには are logical; 手前 is the one about face. If the sentence mentions people watching, choose 手前.
- In 並べ替え, 手前 follows its noun + の or the past verb; the constraint clause comes last.
