まで (until; as far as)

"until / up to / as far as" — an end point in time or place.

まで means "until" or "as far as". It marks the point where something ends, in time (三時まで "until three") or in place (駅まで "as far as the station"). It usually pairs with から: 九時から五時まで "from nine until five". The action continues all the way up to the まで point.

Opening and closing times, how far you travel (from home to school), waiting until a time (来週まで待ってください), and how long something continues.

   銀行は三時までです。

   ぎんこうは さんじまでです。

   The bank is open until three.

   End time: open until three.

2. 02

   東京から大阪まで新幹線で行きます。

   とうきょうから おおさかまで しんかんせんで いきます。

   I go from Tokyo to Osaka by bullet train.

   End place, paired with から.

   来週まで待ってください。

   らいしゅうまで まってください。

   Please wait until next week.

   Continuing until a time: wait until next week.

   毎日、六時まで働きます。

   まいにち、ろくじまで はたらきます。

   I work until six every day.

   The work continues up to six.

5. 05

   空港まで電車で一時間かかります。

   くうこうまで でんしゃで いちじかん かかります。

   It takes an hour by train to the airport.

   まで for the end point of a journey, with かかります (takes time).

  から is the start point; まで is the end point. Compare side by side

  に marks a single point (at three); まで means continuing until that point. Compare side by side

• へ

  駅へ行く = go to the station (direction); 駅まで行く = go as far as the station (end of the journey). Compare side by side

までに (N4) means "by (a deadline)"; まで means continuing until that point. At N5 just remember から〜まで as a pair.
