This form is also taught at JLPT N3, where it carries a different sense or register.

Meaning

Polite requests built on the potential negative of もらう / いただく; the most useful N4 request forms.

〜ていただけませんか is the most useful polite request in N4: "could you please…?". It is built from いただく (humble "receive"), its potential いただける ("can receive"), and a negative question ("couldn't I receive your doing…?"). The roundabout shape is exactly what makes it polite. 〜てもらえませんか is the same idea with plain もらう, a step less formal; 〜てくれませんか is casual. The negative question (〜ませんか) is politer than the plain question (〜ますか).

Asking teachers, bosses, clients, shop staff and strangers for help: explanations, directions, photos, favours. 〜ていただけませんか for superiors and strangers, 〜てもらえませんか for colleagues and acquaintances, 〜てくれない? / 〜てもらえる? for friends. For "please don't", use 〜ないでいただけませんか.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V-て + いただけませんか (most polite): 説明していただけませんか

    ✓
    手伝っていただけませんか。

Start the request with すみませんが / 恐れ入りますが / お忙しいところ申し訳ありませんが to soften it further. In business the sentence often ends with のですが: 見ていただけませんでしょうか / 見ていただきたいのですが. Replying: はい、いいですよ / もちろんです; refusing: すみません、ちょっと… (never a flat いいえ).

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • Look at who is asked: 先生 / 部長 / お客様 → いただけませんか; 友達 → くれない? / もらえる?. Politeness mismatches are the usual distractor.
  • Options often contrast いただけませんか (request) with いただきませんか (invitation to receive) and with させていただけませんか (permission). Decide who performs the verb.
