Meaning
Asking permission to do something, framed as "make/let me do it".
You take the causative form (帰る → 帰らせる = make/let someone go home), change it to the て-form and add ください: 帰らせてください = "please let me go home". It is the standard way to ask permission to do something yourself, especially at work: 休ませてください, 考えさせてください, 私にやらせてください. It sounds a little more eager than 〜てもいいですか because it says you want to do it.
Asking a boss, teacher or host for permission (早退させてください), volunteering for a task (私に説明させてください), and buying time (少し考えさせてください). Used in polite situations; among friends 〜させて (帰らせて) is enough.

Common mistakes
- ✗
(meaning: please let me rest)
- ✓
- Why
- 休んでください asks the teacher to rest. To ask for your own permission you need the causative
- Why
- する becomes させる; there is no しさせる.
- ✗
- Why
- 考える is Group 2, so the causative is 考えさせる, not 考えらせる.
The answer to 〜させてください is usually どうぞ (go ahead) or はい、いいですよ. With a person marked by に (私に), the sentence stresses that you, rather than someone else, want to do it. Do not confuse with the passive-looking 〜されてください, which does not exist; the request form is always 〜させて.
JLPT N4 tips
On the exam
- If the speaker asks permission for their own action and the blank precedes ください / いただけませんか, choose the causative て-form (〜せて / 〜させて).
- Distractors include the plain て-form (帰ってください = asks the listener to go home) and passive forms. Check who performs the action: the speaker → causative.
