〜さ (adjective → noun) "-ness"

sa (meishika)

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

Turns an adjective into a noun expressing degree or measurable quality.

Adding さ to an adjective turns it into a noun for a quality you can measure or talk about: 高い (tall/high) → 高さ (height), 大きい → 大きさ (size), 便利 → 便利さ (convenience). For い-adjectives, drop い and add さ; for な-adjectives, just add さ. いい becomes よさ. The new noun works like any noun: 山の高さは三千メートルです, 大きさを測る.

Measurements (長さ, 重さ, 広さ, 深さ, 速さ), abstract qualities (大切さ, 難しさ, 便利さ, 優しさ), and comparisons (この町の静かさが好きだ). Useful in writing and in questions like 高さはどのくらいですか. Works in all registers.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • い-adjective: drop い + さ: 高い→高さ, 長い→長さ, 重い→重さ, 広い→広さ
  • な-adjective: + さ: 便利→便利さ, 大切→大切さ, 静か→静かさ

Similar grammar and the difference

  • 〜み (N3)

重み, 楽しみ, 甘み also make nouns, but with a subjective, felt sense. さ is the neutral, measurable one and is the N4 form.

  • の・こと nominalisation

の / こと turn whole clauses into nouns (走るのが好き). さ turns a single adjective into a noun for its quality. Compare side by side

  • 〜くする / 〜にする

Adjective + くする changes something's state (長くする = make longer). 長さ is just the noun "length". Compare side by side

Drop the final い of an い-adjective before さ.
  • ✗
    この道具のいさ
    ✓
    この道具のよさ
    Why
いい uses its older stem よ: よさ.

    Why
    な-adjectives attach さ directly, without な.

Common measurement nouns: 高さ (height), 長さ (length), 広さ (area), 重さ (weight), 速さ (speed), 深さ (depth), 太さ (thickness), 強さ (strength). Abstract さ-nouns are common with 分かる / 知る / 感じる: 大切さが分かる, 難しさを知る. For the negative side you can add さ to the negative too, but it is rare; use the opposite adjective instead (低さ, not 高くなさ).

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • A blank before は〜メートルです, を測る, が分かる or はどのくらい almost always needs an adjective + さ.
  • Options often include the adjective itself, the く-form and a な-form (高い / 高く / 高な). Only 高さ can be followed by は, を or が as a noun.
