- い-adjectives form the negative with くない, so the change is 痛くなくなる. じゃない is for nouns and な-adjectives.
〜なくなる is the everyday negative partner of ようになる. Say 食べなくなった rather than 食べないようになった. 〜なくなってきた stresses a gradual change still in progress: だんだん分からなくなってきた. Time cues often go with it: 最近, もう (〜なくなった = no longer), 年を取って, 〜てから.
JLPT N4 tips
On the exam
- If the sentence describes losing an ability (目が悪くなって, 年を取って), the answer is potential + なくなった (読めなくなった), not the plain negative.
- Distractors often show なく in the wrong place (ないなった, なくてなった). The correct shape is always 〜なく + なる.
