Embedded question 〜か "…(who/what/when) …"

Embeds a wh-question inside a sentence.

A question with a question word (誰, 何, いつ, どこ, どう, 何時) can be placed inside a sentence with か: 会議が何時に始まるか知っていますか = do you know what time the meeting starts? The embedded part is in the plain form, the subject takes が, and nouns and な-adjectives usually drop だ before か (誰が先生か). After か come verbs like 分からない, 知っている, 教えてください, 覚えていない.

Asking for or giving information indirectly, in every register: どこで買えばいいか教えてください (tell me where I should buy it). Very common in polite requests for information because it is softer than a direct question. Also for expressing what you don't know or can't remember.

  For yes/no questions. With a question word, use か alone. Compare side by side

  〜ばいいか (どうすればいいか) is a very common embedded form: "what I should do". Compare side by side

  The embedded clause uses the plain form; the polite form belongs only at the end.

Dropping だ: どこが静かか and 誰が先生か are normal; どこが静かだか sounds heavier and is avoided. In writing, か can be followed by を (〜かを知っている); in speech the particle is usually dropped. 〜か、〜 with a comma separates a long embedded question from the main verb.
