〜ずに済む / 〜なくて済む / 〜ないで済む

Meaning

get by without having to; manage without

〜ずに済む / 〜なくて済む / 〜ないで済む mean "manage without doing X": something troublesome was avoided, usually thanks to some circumstance. タクシーに乗らずに済んだ (didn't have to take a taxi). The feeling is relief. 済む (to be settled) is the key verb; ずに is the most formal of the three connectors.

Both speech and writing. Very common with おかげで (thanks to) and in explanations of how a problem was avoided. ずに済む is written or careful; ないで済む is casual.
