Common mistakes

  • ✗
(neutral report)
    ✓
    Why
てまで normally comes with rejection or criticism; a neutral report sounds incomplete.
  • ✗
    Why
    Do not combine both forms.
  • ✗
    Why
てでも expresses determination; with a negative wish, use てまで.

The speaker's judgment is usually 'not worth it'. までして is useful with nouns like 徹夜, 借金, 無理. In questions: 〜てまで〜のか (do you really have to go that far?).

JLPT N2 tips

On the exam

  • If the main clause is a negative wish or a rhetorical question and the て-form precedes the blank, choose てまで.
  • Distinguish from てでも (positive determination) by the main clause.
Only てまで marks an excessive means.
