Meaning

taking … as an opportunity; triggered by; … led to

〜をきっかけに means "X was the trigger for Y": an event that started a change or a new activity. 留学をきっかけに日本文化に興味を持った. きっかけ is an everyday word for a starting point, so this pattern is personal and neutral. 〜がきっかけで puts the trigger as the subject.

Both speech and writing, everyday register. Common in self-introductions and personal stories (〜がきっかけで日本語を始めました). The formal counterpart is 〜を契機に.
