By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

toward… / to… (target of an action or attitude) / in contrast to…

〜に対して marks the target that an action, feeling, or attitude is directed at: "toward X" (親に対して反抗する – rebel against one's parents). It also has a second job: contrasting two things ("X, whereas Y"), as in 兄は静かなのに対して、弟はにぎやかだ. The target use is the one most often tested.

Both speech and writing, slightly formal. Common in news, business, and academic contexts: complaints toward a company, attitudes toward customers, questions to a speaker. The contrast use (〜のに対して) is typical in essays comparing two groups.

    ✓
    兄は静かなのに対して、弟はにぎやかだ。
    Why
In the contrast use, a clause needs の before に対して: 静かなのに対して.

に対して implies a relationship of facing someone or something; the sentence usually has a verb of attitude or reaction (接する, 反抗する, 答える, 抗議する). The contrast use often pairs with 一方 in meaning but is more neutral and factual. Kanji spelling 対 is standard; the reading is たい (にたいして).

JLPT N2 tips

On the exam

  • In 文法形式の判断, check what follows: an attitude/action verb → に対して; an evaluation adjective → にとって; a topic verb (話す, 調べる) → について.
  • The contrast use appears with two subjects and opposite predicates: Aは〜のに対して、Bは〜.
  • Watch the noun form に対する before a noun (批判, 態度, 意見) – options with に対して before a noun are wrong.
