〜ほど〜ない / 〜くらい〜はない

hodo … nai / kurai … wa nai

By Nihongo PathUpdated

This form is also taught at JLPT N4 and JLPT N3, where it carries a different sense or register.

Meaning

not as … as; nothing is as … as

Two related patterns. A ほど B ない means "A is not as … as B": 今年は去年ほど暑くない (this year is not as hot as last year). A ほど〜はない / A くらい〜はない means "nothing is as … as A", a subjective superlative: 母の料理ほどおいしいものはない. The second pattern expresses the speaker's strong feeling.

Both speech and writing. The comparison pattern is neutral. The superlative pattern is emotional and common in praise, complaints, and advertising (これほど便利なものはない).

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Noun + ほど + adjective / verb negative (去年ほど暑くない)
  • Noun + ほど / くらい + adjective + Noun / もの / こと + はない (superlative)
  • Verb / clause + ほど + 〜はない (彼と話すほど楽しいことはない)
