Meaning
should, ought to (as a matter of principle or common sense)
〜べきだ means "should" as a matter of principle, duty, or common sense: 約束は守るべきだ. It states what is right, not what is legally required. べきではない means "should not". べきだった / べきではなかった express regret about the past. する becomes すべき or するべき.
Both speech and writing, but it sounds firm; addressed to a listener directly it can be preachy. Common in essays and opinions. Softer alternatives: 〜たほうがいい (advice), 〜なければならない (obligation).
