〜ないものか / 〜ないものだろうか

isn't there some way to …?; I do wish … could …

〜ないものか / 〜ないものだろうか expresses a strong wish for something that seems hard: 何とかして彼を助けられないものか = "Isn't there some way to help him?" It looks like a question, but the speaker is really voicing a hope. 何とか (somehow) and もう少し (a bit more) often appear.

Both spoken and written; common in inner thoughts, essays, and requests for improvement. Usually with the potential form (できないものか・ならないものか). 〜ないものだろうか is softer and more reflective; 〜ないものかと思う reports the wish.

• 〜ものか / 〜もんか

  Affirmative + ものか is a strong refusal (行くものか = no way I'll go). Negative + ものか is a wish; the negative changes everything. Compare side by side

• 〜てやまない

  Formal "sincerely wish / hope" (願ってやまない), a statement, not a question-shaped wish. Compare side by side

• 〜ようではないか

  A proposal to act together ("let us …"). ないものか only voices a wish and does not propose action. Compare side by side

  Why

  The wish needs the negative (usually potential negative). 助けるものか would mean "as if I would help!".

  Without 何とか or a giving verb, the bare form sounds odd; add a wish marker.

Set adverbs: 何とか(して)・どうにか・もう少し・せめて. In proposals: 〜できないものでしょうか is a polite way to suggest an improvement. Inner monologue in fiction uses ないものか frequently to show a character's longing.
