Xこととて gives a reason for something that needs excusing and asks for understanding: 慣れぬこととて "as I am not used to this (please forgive me)". It is old-fashioned and humble; the second clause is usually an apology, a request for leniency, or an explanation of an unavoidable situation.
Very formal or old-fashioned: apologies in letters, ceremonial speech, historical narration. Not used in everyday conversation.
